If you want a glimpse into Orkney's Natural History and Maritime Past, or to study it in more detail, Stromness Museum is a must.  Since 1837 the museum has amassed a unique and fascinating collection, which has something for everyone.

Learn how to survive in the arctic through displays about Dr John Rae, Sir John Franklin and the Arctic Whalers.  Find out about local connections with The Hudson Bay Company and the Canadian Fur Trade.

On show are artefacts salvaged from the German Fleet, which was scuttled in Scapa Flow in 1919, in sight of Stromness.  The recently refurbished Victorian Natural History Gallery has a magnificent bird collection complemented by displays of eggs, fossils, sea creatures, mammals, butterflies and moths.

Also available are kids activities and a photographic archive.  You will enjoy your visit!

To get here, follow the Blue Plaque heritage trail south through town from Stromness Pier Head. It is a half mile walk along the winding main street of Stromness, which is in itself one of the historic high points of Orkney.
